Here are some things to consider if you would like to join us for the weekend, but are looking to cut costs:

Have you applied to your federation for funds? Often, there are funds for this type of PD for teachers throughout the province. Speak to staff members who may know, or check with your local office.

Have you spoken to your principal/department head about covering some or all of the expenses for you to come to the conference? Often, money is set aside for staff to attend PD events. Remember that you will return to your school with new knowledge about Drama and Dance that you can share with colleagues to improve programs at your school. Offer to lead a workshop for your colleagues in return for financial support

You may find an opportunity to apply to your school board directly to cover some or part of your conference expenses. Check with staff members (you may have a rep at your school who is responsible for this) or call your school board directly and speak with the person in charge of the arts. Again, offer to lead a workshop after the conference, in return for support

What are your plans for accommodations at Niagara-on-the-Lake? Consider staying in one of the large suites that sleep up to 4 guests. At a rate of $189 per night, this can be a more cost effective way to stay for the weekend, when the cost is spread over a group. Coming up with colleagues or friends and rooming together is economical and a lot of fun!

Cut back on travel expenses by carpooling with a colleague or friend.

We look forward to seeing you at the conference!

IMAGINE – CREATE – CELEBRATE
THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF CODE

Conference Overview
It is a very exciting time for drama and dance in the education system within the province of Ontario. This is clearly reflected by the amount of activity that CODE is involved in and the ever-increasing relevance of the organization since its inception in 1970.

In October, hundreds of Ontario educators will come together to celebrate CODE’s 40th anniversary in one of the most beautiful towns in the province, Niagara-on- the-Lake. This vibrant arts centre is the perfect venue to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Developing Theatre Skills for Drama and Dance Teachers
The development of theatre skills is an area that we often wish to build upon but do not have the opportunity to pursue. Many teachers are challenged by creating theatre and dance performances because they have little or no experience in the skills necessary to undertake these tasks. CODE's partnership with the SHAW FESTIVAL provides unprecedented opportunities to increase our knowledge in theatre by cultivating skill sets that are transferable to the classroom. We are very excited about this partnership.

Cross-curricular Arts Integration
All educators want to provide positive educational experiences for our students. It is therefore essential that we address the diversity of learners in our classroom. This is a reality of the classroom and so too a reality for our Conference. Drama and dance have long been recognized as experiential, transformational, and multimodal. The arts cater to audio, visual and kinesthetic learners because it works on all of these levels. We recognize that drama and dance are art forms in their own rights but they can also be used as vehicles for learning in other subject areas.

CODE needs to respond to the circumstances of our times. We are an organization for drama and dance and we are educators. This year, as Conference Chair, I want to forge alliances with other disciplines so that we that can better serve students in all subject areas. I will therefore investigate professional learning opportunities at the 2010 conference for educators that incorporate drama and dance and other disciplines.

Implementation of the Revised Drama and Dance Curricula
The implementation of the revised curriculum is an exciting opportunity for teachers to evolve as educators. The Ministry of Education has recognized the power of drama and dance as subject areas. In elementary, dance is now recognized as a separate subject with its own curriculum. This fall’s conference will endeavor to assist teachers with practical ways to incorporate the revised curriculum into their classroom practices.

Assisting and Supporting the Artist/Teacher
The overall theme of the conference is to inspire the artist in the teacher and we are fortunate that so many artists wish to share their talents and expertise with teachers and their students. This provides a wonderful dimension to program delivery and serves as a great opportunity to learn new things. The artist/teacher can benefit from many workshop experiences and involvement with CODE.

The conference will provide opportunities for delegates to experience illuminating, informative and practically based keynotes, workshops, presentations and resource providers. It is relevant to those working across all levels and sectors - in Early Years, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education as well as members of the drama and dance community. Partnerships are an important element of the conference program planning, and we have developed, and will continue to expand, our partnerships with outside organizations.

Join CODE in celebrating the accomplishments of our Ruby Anniversary. Spread the word to friends and colleagues. Save the date Oct. 29th to 31st.

Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or comments.
